About the topic

Digital transformation, sustainability and young people’s involvement in politics. Although these fields may seem distinct, they are key issues for the further development of democratic policy in the European Union and its member states. The EU is responsible for governing digital markets, fundamental rights, and climate and environmental policies. This affects the lives, opportunities and democratic involvement of young people – now and in the future. Democracy is heavily affected by the choices we make for the regulation of the internet, as well as for tackling climate change. These policies are therefore key to Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Youth Work.

The EU plays a particularly important role here. More than in almost any other policy area, it sets the standard and helps determine the pace and direction!

On the other hand, this suggests that digital education, youth work, and training must also continue to evolve. In times of polarisation, information disorder, and platformisation, it is more important than ever that we not only protect and train users who know how to use individual applications or technologies, but also competent citizens who understand the internet and digitalisation and who help shape democratic culture in the digital realm—in other words, a more systemic and critical understanding of ‘the digital’ and a more European one.

The democracy and human rights perspective

The DARE network, together with the partners in the project Digital Youth Work –  Rights-sensitive, Open, Accessible, Democratic, invites to a short exchange. on our findings.

We are pleased to present the analysis conducted in the project and the feedback we have received from young people and educators regarding their vision for digital education and youth work – and their message to the policy level.

In addition, we briefly present our other findings—a handbook for educators titled More Than Go with the Flow illustrating the approach of digital citizenship education — as well as our analysis of educational practice and potential areas for development.
