European Space for Citizenship Education: An Important Initiative

The DARE networks welcomes the effort of the Council of Europe to create a European Space for Citizenship Education (ESCE) during the next two years.

In close cooperation with the Council of Europe Education Department, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Movement, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and the Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK), DARE was involved in co-organising the Launching Conference of the European Space for Citizenship Education in Berlin from 17-18 October 2024.

DARE members: Nils-Eyk Zimmermann (AdB, DE), Sabine Jenni (demokrative, CH), Moritz Borchardt (KulturLIfe/DARE chairperson, DE), Patricia Hladschik (EPAN, Zentrum polis, AT) and Georg Pirker (AdB, DE)

Since the establishement of the ESCE is an important step for the recognition and support of quality citizenship education in the formal and nonformal educational fields, DARE Network is looking forward to the following steps among German-speaking countries in the CoE and regards the establishment of the ESCE in general.

Five times “for”

The DARE network is particularly concerned to recognize the important contributions of non-formal education and civil society to quality EDC/HRE, especially these five aspects:

  • For recognition of non-formal citizenship and human rights-related learning.
  • For a shared understanding of quality on the basis of the EDC/HRE charter.
  • For meaningful practice-research-policy cooperation.
  • For more citizenship and human rights education.
  • For more realistic views on the fragile conditions of civil society in the field of citizenship education.
