Letter from the Board
Dear readers of e-DARE,
the results of the election to the European Parliament as well as the
process of negotiating the new head of the European Commission are good
examples for the state of democracy and citizen's participation in the
EU. There seems to be a lot to do until one can state that some lessons
are finally learned. From our side we strongly support the EUCIS-LLL
position on the outcome of the elections (http://dare-network.blogspot.de/2014/06/eucis-lll-drawing-lessons-from.html)
and would like to add that again it remains highly important for
educational civil society organizations to make more and stronger use of
their capacity when it comes to European networking and policy making.
Our member organizations face great difficulties to link up to the
international and European level, as it means a lot of extra work and
capacity, which most of the organizations clearly do not have. As
European network we are asked to provide more energy to link this gap
between member's practice and European policy work. Therefore, the DARE
board works on a future perspective strategy taking this need into
account even more! But at the same time DARE in its fully voluntary
structure has only limited capacities and depends on solid contributions
and regular involvement of ALL its members.
Good opportunities to get to know and make use of DARE's work is the
involvement in common projects such as the
EDC for ALL
project. An even easier way is to meet DARE members in conferences such
as the upcoming conference of our Spanish member Fundacion Cives
or the upcoming NECE conference on 16-18 October in Vienna, where DARE
provides a workshop on peace education and reconciliation work as twin
fields of EDC/HRE. In Vienna, DARE will also hold its 2014 General
new members can join the network.
EDC/HRE is a public good, definitely worth fighting for and as such it
needs to be maintained and cared for as a core state obligation and
responsibility. In times of TTIP negotiations this good is heavily under
pressure. In addition to that, the current EC investigation on VAT
revision might result in new difficulties for our field.
And don't forget: sharing is caring! So post your news and EDC/HRE
the independent European NGO resource on EDC/HRE!
Best regards on behalf of the Board

Conference: in Defense of Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human
Rights, Seville, 27/28 June 2014
In February 2013, hundreds of organizations, including DARE, signed a
memorandum sent to the Council of Europe to denounce the elimination of
Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights of the Spanish
curriculum. We achieved a lot of support and international impact and we
now need to request again the union of the organizations that signed the
text to demand together, in a conference at Seville, that Education for
Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights is not an education that we can
ignore and eliminate from any European official curriculum. Sign up for
the conference on 27 and 28 June in the Parliament of Andalusia
(Seville) to defend an education based on democracy and human rights ...
