Letter from the Board

Dear readers of e-DARE,

The Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (DARE) Network, at the moment with 51 members from 25 countries the biggest independent NGO network in HRE/EDC in Europe, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

All started with the Antwerp Declaration on Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe in which the funding members stated that we will be »a Europe-wide network of NGOs, academic, research and other organisations focusing on the twin fields of human rights education and education for democratic citizenship; committed to promoting through education a deeper understanding of human rights and democracy within Europe«.

Over the last ten years DARE has been fulfilling this mandate. We were indeed creating new environments in which member organisations could thrive, benefiting from common services and the pooling of experience and expertise. Moreover, in the last years a need for stronger advisory component in DARE activities was expressed by network members and today DARE is building its reputation also as an expert advisory body and is as such appreciated by many international stakeholders.

So, after 10 years we are still here. Although at the moment depending only on membership fees and donations we are determined more than ever to continue our mandate. Mission impossible? Not at all! Through commitment of all member organizations, cooperation within HRE/EDC projects, regular exchange of expertise and best practices our network daily grows, gains its strength and stands for inclusion of human rights education and education for democratic citizenship into every level of life-long learning in Europe.

See you at the DARE Spring Academy in Maribor, Slovenia, or any of the next DARE events. We are looking forward to hear your news, share your troubles, contribute to solutions!

Elena Begant
Board member, Treasurer of the DARE Network
